COVID Testing Q&A

What is COVID testing?

COVID testing refers to a group of screening procedures that detect and diagnose COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Total Family Medical offers rapid COVID testing, also known as antigen testing. Rapid tests are less expensive than polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and provide quicker results.

Who should undergo COVID-19 testing?

Total Family Medical recommends you undergo COVID-19 testing if:

  • You have symptoms of COVID-19
  • You’ve had direct contact with someone who’s sick with COVID-19
  • You’ve recently traveled or attended a large public gathering
  • A contact tracer has asked you to get tested

You might benefit from testing even if you don’t have symptoms. Contact Total Family Medical if you have any questions.

How does COVID testing work?

Rapid COVID testing screens for antigens, substances that cause your body’s immune system to create antibodies. COVID testing analyzes your saliva or mucus for the presence of antigens. If the results come back positive, it means you probably have COVID-19.

Total Family Medical performs rapid COVID testing on-site. On the day of your appointment, your provider uses a thin cotton swab to take a sample from your throat or nose. The sample is analyzed for the presence of antigens.

How accurate is COVID-19 testing?

Rapid COVID-19 testing is most effective in the early stages of an infection when your viral load is highest. Rapid tests are less sensitive than PCR tests, so it’s possible to receive a false positive. Even so, it’s better to get tested than not. Early detection is one of the most effective ways to prevent further spread and protect your loved ones.

What if the results of my COVID test are positive?

If the results of your COVID test come back positive, it’s important to isolate at home. Stay in a specific “sick room” or section of the house and avoid direct contact with friends or family. If you have to interact with others, wear a cloth face covering and stay at least six feet away. Avoid sharing utensils and use a separate bathroom if possible.

You can stop isolating 10 days after your symptoms appear and 24 hours after your fever subsides without the use of over-the-counter medication. If you don’t have any symptoms, you can end isolation 10 days after you receive a positive test result.
